The isolation transformer ensures complete electrical separation between the AC shore connection and the onboard system. This increases safety, eliminates the need for a galvanic isolator, and prevents alarms triggered by incorrect polarity.
Safety on shore is ensured with proper installation. In the event of a short circuit, a fuse will blow or a circuit breaker will trip when a leakage current is detected. Direct connection of the shore ground wire to the metal parts of the boat causes electro-galvanic corrosion. Supplying phase and neutral conductors without galvanic isolation to the boat creates a potentially dangerous situation – the circuit breaker may not trip, and the fuse may not blow in case of a short circuit to a metal part of the boat.
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two different conductively connected metals are exposed to an electrically conductive liquid – typically seawater, but also to a lesser extent freshwater. Generally, the less noble (more active) metal corrodes faster than the nobler metal, which is cathodically protected. The rate of galvanic corrosion depends on several factors, such as the type of environment, conductivity of the liquid, temperature, and the materials used.
It is a mistake to think that galvanic corrosion only threatens boats with metal or aluminum hulls. It can occur on virtually any boat – all it takes is for metal parts such as the shaft or propeller to be submerged in water. When the boat is connected to the shore power supply, galvanic corrosion begins to quickly degrade the anode and then attacks other metal components in contact with water.
This situation sometimes leads to omitting the ground wire during shore connection – however, this is extremely dangerous because the circuit breaker may not trip and the fuse may not blow in case of a short circuit on metal parts of the boat.
The best solution to prevent galvanic corrosion while ensuring electrical safety is to install an isolation transformer between the shore connection and the boat's electrical system.
Soft start is a standard function of the isolation transformer. It prevents the shore fuse from blowing due to an inrush current when connecting the transformer.
