Reliable semiconductor sensor for detecting carbon monoxide (CO) and other hazardous flammable gases in ambient air.
The MQ-9 sensor module is designed to measure the concentration of carbon monoxide and flammable gases with a measurement range of 0 to 10,000 ppm. Measurement results can be obtained by reading the voltage from the analog output or using the digital output with an adjustable detection threshold. The sensor is equipped with a 4-pin connector with a 2.54 mm pitch for easy connection to development platforms such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
The module is ideal for hazardous gas detection systems in households, industrial applications, or hobby projects. Unlike natural gas and propane-butane, carbon monoxide is heavier than air and has no odor or taste, making it an especially dangerous gas that can cause poisoning and, in extreme cases, death.
Digital output D0
Using the potentiometer located on the back of the board, you can set the threshold gas concentration at which the digital output D0 changes from high to low level. This output can be connected directly to a microcontroller, development kit, or, for example, a buzzer that will signal an increased concentration of hazardous gases in the air.
Analog output A0
The sensor also features an analog output A0, which should be connected to an A/D converter (analog input, e.g., on Arduino). This allows for more accurate gas concentration measurement using a proportional voltage signal.
Protection against the silent killer
Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it has no odor or taste. People exposed to it may only feel symptoms such as drowsiness, headaches, and nausea. The MQ-9 sensor provides an early warning against this danger and can be used to trigger acoustic or optical alarms or automatically shut off the gas supply.
